Massage is the manipulation of superficial layers of muscle and connective tissue and is used to maintain physical health as well as inducing relaxation. It helps to alleviate the build of of stress and tension in the muscles from every day use. Target tissues may include muscles, tendons, ligaments, skin, joints or other connective tissue, as well as lymphatic vessels, or organs of the gastrointestinal system. The aim is to improve mobility and create a feeling of wellbeing and relaxation. The new Lava Shells Massage, as seen on The Apprentice, is now available at Gloots! The mainstream medical profession now supports alternative therapies like massage to complement the conventional treatment of diseases such as MS and cancer. Massage may be practised on its own or as one component of more broad-based healing methods, such as aromatherapy. Studies of massage in people with MS found that it was associated with increased self esteem, improved social functioning, reduced anxiety and depression, and improved image of one's body. The slow 'stroking' massage (that uses the flat of the hand) over the spine was associated with improvement in anxiety and muscle stiffness.

Massage for people with cancer is promoted as a natural way to help sufferers relax and cope with stress, anxiety, sickness, headaches, depression and pain, helping them to feel good, and giving them a way to feel they are helping themselves.

Details of all treatments offered can be found on our Treatments Page. If you are unsure which massage may be best for you, Jacqueline is a well qualified massage therapist and she can advise you on the best type of massage for you.

Massage is not regulated by law and practitioners are not required to have any specific training or be a member of any professional organisation. However, there are various organisations massage practitioners may join, many of which are working together as the General Council for Massage Therapies. National standards for massage therapy were agreed in 2009 by Skills for Health, and massage practitioners who meet these standards can register with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council.
